27 Tanjong Pagar Road #04-01 and Attic

27 Tanjong Pagar Road 1

Location History
Originally called Salinter, Tanjong Pagar means “cape of stakes” in Malay, reflecting its origins as a fishing village with kelong (offshore fishing traps) along the coast.

During the British colonial era, this area was home to thousands of Indian and Chinese dock workers, with the nearby hills once covered in nutmeg and gambier plantations.”

Building Features
Designed by Swan and Maclaren and built in 1927, this building illustrates a distinctive shophouse scheme in Tanjong Pagar. Unlike typical shophouses, these shophouses lack classical references, Chinese ornaments, and Straits Eclectic whimsy, instead featuring fair-faced brickwork, stucco-framed windows, a set-back upper storey with a small terrace, and a dentilated shark’s tooth parapet wall, reflecting the expressionist tendencies of the Amsterdam School.
